a drunkard walks into a bar
and says,
"where's my Tuesday?"
you're drunk! we shout
you alcoholic!
the alcoholic puts his face in his hands
and says,
"where's my Tuesday?"
fuck off! we shout
you're a mailman!
the mailman starts to look real sad
and asks,
"have you seen Tuesday?"
no sir, we say
you're a lonelyman.
the lonelyman begins to tear at his hair
and cries,
"please find my Tuesday."
he thinks of his bicycle
crushed by a motor car in '98
and this girl with a red mouth and a soft smile
who turned on a flashlight
put on her hoodie and looked
with him all night
they put up signs.
the boy fights angrily to keep from crying
and says,
"i'm a man i'm a man"
the girl shakes her head and her hair falls loose
and she says
"but i'll never love anyone else"
and he punches his backpack to the sidewalk
and shouts
"i don't need you!"
and she nods her chin and pulls in her fists
and says
"i never said you did"
the drunkard lays his head on the counter
and sobs
"she found my bicycle"
he looks at his fists clutching a dollar forty-eight
and says
"she gave me a dollar forty-eight for repairs"
we look at him and he looks at the bartender
and shakes his head
"i never made them"
the mailman smiles a big happy smile
"have you seen Tuesday?
she's the prettiest girl in the world
and i used to deliver her letters
and she used to hold a flower
and wait on the sidewalk
wearing lipstick and an old pair of boots
and i love her"
he stops
he stops
"have you seen my Tuesday?"
we do not say
she's out back
selling crack
so she can send her baby to school
she loves that kid
like she used to love you
for his laugh and his fighting
he's four
but she won't see anyone who won't
pay up front
so she won't see you
and she'd like to drive up to the city to visit
but she don't own a car
just a rusty red bicycle
we don't say that
we say
you're a drunkard
get out.
